Welding creates residual tensile stresses approaching the yield strength of the base material and hardened Heat-Affected Zones vulnerable to hydrogen-induced cracking, stress corrosion cracking in amine/caustic/H₂S service, and brittle fracture. These are not theoretical risks – they are the mechanism behind real catastrophic failures in South African pressure equipment.
Under ASME Section VIII Div.1 (UCS-56), PWHT is mandatory for P-No. 1 carbon steels above 38mm wall thickness and for all P-No. 3 materials regardless of thickness. ASME B31.1 and B31.3 add further requirements by P-Number and service class. Skip or under-execute it, and your conformity assessment will fail – your equipment cannot be commissioned.
Improperly documented PWHT records are one of the most common reasons AIA submissions are rejected in South Africa. Glospech's PWHT service provides calibrated thermocouple data, temperature charts, and regulatory documentation that passes first time.

Electric Resistance Heating
Flexible ceramic heating pads for complex geometries and dissimilar metal joints
Up to 24 independent control zones for precise gradient management
Accounts for over 90% of field PWHT worldwide
Carbon steel soak range: 593–649°C per ASME P-No. 1 requirements
Calibrated thermocouple placement per ASME code requirements
Induction Heating
Internal electromagnetic heating – significantly faster than resistance for standardised pipe joints
Uniform temperature distribution across wall thickness
Ideal for high-volume piping during plant turnarounds

What PWHT prevents
Hydrogen-induced cracking · Stress corrosion cracking · Brittle fracture · Weld fatigue failure · HAZ hardness exceedance

PWHT must be completed before final AIA inspection. Plan your heat treatment early – hold-point delays caused by late PWHT scheduling are common and entirely avoidable.
